HSR Service Review

ATU Local 107 has long made an issue of overcrowded buses, late buses and simply not enough buses. We have made it an issue because poor service levels cause stress for both drivers and passengers. Physical assaults against operators have risen as service levels declined. Verbal assaults, such as insults and angry words directed at operators are no longer counted, there are too many. The situation is not sustainable.

In September 2007, the union delivered a comprehensive presentation to the Steering Committee of the Transit Master Plan for Hamilton. In November, even though contract negotiations almost broke down over monetary and human dignity issues, we still pressed for an independent service review.

What we achieved at the bargaining table was an important first step. HSR management has committed to conducting an independent scheduling review that must begin by November 2008.

Once the study has been finished, likely sometime in 2009, the report will come to the Transit Management Team, the ATU Executive and the Operations staff. The team will prepare an implementation plan to be part of the Transit/Public Works budget submission.

This is a long process and we ask for our passengers’ patience while it is underway. Please be assured that the union will do its utmost to make the study a success and will lobby hard for an implementation plan that will reverse the years of declining service levels.
